The backup route is a satellite-based contingency route designed to serve in the event of a total outage of submarine cables.
The service is primarily aimed at organizations that are critical to society, including those in transport, tourism, banking and payment services, healthcare, and the import of food and pharmaceuticals.
The service is sold by local internet service providers and telecommunications companies and is therefore, at its core, a Korda Networks wholesale service.

Safety at Sea
The Maritime Vessel Service operated by the Icelandic Maritime Watch Centre supports safe navigation within Iceland’s maritime economic zone. Its role is to help protect vessels, passengers, and crews, while also strengthening measures to prevent pollution from ships.
Vessels sailing within Iceland’s EEZ have access to telecommunications, emergency and safety services, and general maritime support services.
Telecommunications Services
Telecommunications services for vessels in Icelandic waters and surrounding areas are operated remotely from the Icelandic Maritime Vessel Service centre.
Emergency and Safety Services for Seafarers
The Icelandic Maritime Vessel Service is responsible for key emergency and safety services for seafarers in the ocean areas around Iceland.
Monitoring and management of emergency ship communications, including international distress channels.
National emergency and working channels, AIS, Inmarsat, and Cospas-Sarsat.
NAVTEX services for vital, important, and routine notifications.
Requests for medical assistance through MEDICO.
Broadcasting navigational warnings, including information on lighthouse malfunctions, wrecks, obstacles, and sea ice.
Monitoring vessels in the reporting system, both manually and automatically.
Maintaining contact with foreign rescue coordination centres.
If a scheduled notification is not received from a vessel, or if the Maritime Vessel Service receives information indicating that follow-up, search, or rescue action may be required within Iceland’s EEZ, the necessary measures are taken in consultation with all relevant parties able to provide assistance.
